FFWN seasonal radio activity

The questions of the week for the 10/17/25 FediFridayWinlinkNet was “Does your ham radio activity change with the seasons, and if so how?” Here re teh responses:

  • No (6)
  • Just starting to ramp my activity up, so portable operations will probably decrease in the rainy season
  • More time in the shack and less at the parks in winter. I even operate from my Jeep when the real cold arrives. Also, more digital modes in winter than summer. In the summer, I do as much cycling to parks as I can do and that translates to more CW.
  • Yes, Spring, summer, and fall I concentrate mostly on VHF/UHF, and in the winter I add more HF to the mix.
  • HAM ACTIVITY CHANGES LITTLE IF AT ALL
  • Yes, from fall to spring I can utilize the W3DRA-10 Gateway in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware with no issues. From late spring to fall, my connections with it are intermittent and it was determined that it is because of the leaves on the trees.
  • Yes, more SOTA when warmer!
  • Nope. Portable operation continues, it just gets less pleasant!
  • Very little change for me. I tend to be up very early and chasing the gray line moves my morning schedule up and down the clock.
  • Yes, generally more active on ham radio during the winter, though more POTA in summer.
  • Summer for HT around town, fall for checking antennas & drills, winter for projects
  • Yes, there is more activity in winter, when it’s cold outside.
  • Not really other than focusing on different bands that are seasonal.
  • Yes. More 80m, less 6m.
  • less pota in the summer
  • Winter activity effectively stops portable exterior ops and outside CW QRP sprints. December brings out the 10 meter loop for contest activity. It seems I will be engage in serious contests in the winter and only put in token effort in the summer.
  • I’m newly licensed and just starting to get into HF. I would think HF would change with the season. Also, once our RV is up and running again, my radios are in the RV and that could dictate how and when I operate.
  • Less POTA when it’s really cold or really hot. Otherwise not much.
